Local Attractions & Places to Visit

Alan & Sandra are on hand to offer all sorts of local knowledge – please don’t hesitate to ask! They are a mine of information and always keen to get a map out or show you how to get off the beaten track and find a good pint of ale by a stream after a breathtaking walk!

Activities and Sports

We can give you more information about Fishing, Rock-climbing, Mountaineering, Hill-walking, Mountain Biking, Paint-Balling, Swimming, Horse Riding, Gliding, Para-gliding & Hang-gliding, Rallying, Archery and Shooting. Do ask us about pick-ups from The Offa’s Dyke Path. Offa’s Dyke is a large, 8th Century linear earthwork that roughly follows the current border between England and Wales, just a few minutes’ drive from The Farm.

Wildlife and Nature

The Farm Snead is located within sight of the Roundton National Nature Reserve, Craven Arms is the home of the Secret Hills Centre where you can see the life-sized replica of the Shropshire Mammoth and the Bog Mine and Visitor Centre at Stiperstones (6 miles) is an excellent centre for walking around spectacular scenery. The Long Mynd and National Trust owned Carding Mill Valley are within easy striking distance.

Castles and Heritage

Lots of castles and heritage sites nearby, including: Stokesay Castle, National Trust owned Powis Castle, Ludlow Castle, Clun Castle, Montgomery Castle and Shrewsbury Castle.

In the locale, we have Glansevern Gardens at Berriew, Dingle Garden and Nurseries at Welshpool and the Shrewsbury Flower Show. We can also recommend Derwen Garden Centre & Farm Shop as well as Coed y Dinas Country Store, both very near Welshpool. Our local emporium in Montgomery, R.H. Bunner’s Traditional Ironmongers was frequented by Alan’s Grandparents and we continue to shop there regularly.

Arts and Culture

Including Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru / Welsh National Eisteddfod, The Presteigne Festival (last week in August), Llangollen International Eisteddfod (second week in July) and Llandrindod Wells Victorian Festival (last week in August).

Where to Eat

We do Evening Meals and Packed Lunches by prior arrangement, which is especially useful if you’re walking or cycling. We can discuss menu options, seasonal produce & price prior to your arrival. If you’re looking for a cosy cup of tea or good country pub with traditional ales and locally sourced food, below are just a few recommendations. We can often telephone on your behalf, should you wish to book a table in advance.

The Castle Hotel, Bishop’s Castle
The Three Tuns, Bishop’s Castle
